The need comes before the format
A shop, professional practice or neighbourhood business does not need an app simply because its customers use smartphones. There must first be a concrete reason to return: booking an appointment, checking an order, accessing documents or finding useful information. Write down the action you want to simplify and the obstacle the customer faces today. If the only requirement is to display opening hours and contact details, a well-organised website might be the most sensible starting point.
Compare the options in real conditions
A PWA is a web experience that can offer application-like features, including installation on a device where supported. Offline behaviour, notifications and access to phone capabilities depend on the browser, operating system and implementation. An app distributed through stores follows specific requirements and procedures instead. Do not choose from an abstract feature list: test essential functions on devices your customers actually use, including slower connections and older phones. Check the complete journey, not just whether the opening screen looks right.
Your decision checklist
- Define the three most frequent actions and the steps needed to complete them.
- Check whether camera access, notifications, payments or offline use are genuinely necessary.
- Establish who updates content, availability and service information.
- Plan accessibility, support, privacy and account recovery.
- Compare development, distribution and maintenance, rather than the initial release alone.
A small but complete first release
Choose a limited journey that delivers value on its own. For example, an appointment request must explain when confirmation will arrive: submitting a form does not necessarily mean a booking has been accepted. Avoid requiring an account when one is not needed. Use readable text, recognisable controls and error messages that explain how to fix the problem. Test the journey with people outside the project without telling them where to tap. Provide a clear way to ask for help if they cannot continue.
Decide who will look after it
Before starting, appoint an owner and agree how updates, support requests and retained data will be handled. Check that the business keeps access to its domain, accounts and materials. Appusher is a CBF service for app distribution: it can be part of the project assessment without replacing a needs analysis. Review the service presentation and discuss which arrangements suit your circumstances with the team. The best choice is one you can keep useful over time, not the option with the longest list of features on paper. Bring your customer journey to a discussion with CBF E-Social before settling on a format.
